Video: The Requirements for Co-Existence with Hamas

Despite 19 months of a highly restrictive Israeli blockade and a three-week military assault, Hamas remains in control of the Gaza Strip and a majority party in the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Israeli, U.S. and Arab leaders need to recognize that if Hamas cannot be beaten militarily, then it must be engaged politically. That means accepting the idea of dealing with a Palestinian unity government that includes Hamas. Such a coalition between Hamas and Fateh is essential for the future of a Palestinian state and peace in the region.

A Palestine Center panel on 29 January, 2009 discussed the political staying power of Hamas after weeks of Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip earlier in the month. Amjad Atallah of the New America Foundation and Dr. Robert Pastor of American University and the carter Center, shared their thoughts on the matter.
