Palestine News: Pope Visit; Bethlehem Restricted

Papal Visit Rife With Political Significance

Starting today, Pope Benedict XVI is travelling to Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Occupied Territories. For a Pope whose past comments have rankled Muslims and Jews alike, many will be scrutinizing his every word.

Already, his trip has been politicized. Israel pressured the Pope not to meet the mayor of Sakhnin. The Palestinian-Israeli mayor opposed Israel's military assault on Gaza.

Likewise, Palestinians are seeking papal pressure on Israel:
Palestinian leaders this week made public a long-simmering dispute over Israeli plans to demolish part of a Catholic church that was allegedly built illegally. That followed an argument with Israel over a plan to host the pope in an outdoor theater the Palestinians were building alongside Israel's massive West Bank separation barrier.
Some of the region's Islamists consider the visit by this Pope provocative.

Israel has mobilized its security apparatus to arrange for the Pope's visit. It will be shutting down areas he visits.

"The thing that worries me most is the speech that the pope will deliver here," said Archbishop Fouad Twal, the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, "One word for the Muslims and I’m in trouble; one word for the Jews and I’m in trouble. At the end of the visit the pope goes back to Rome and I stay here with the consequences."

Israel Restricts Palestinian Land Access in Bethlehem

Continued expansion of Israeli settlements and their outposts, along with other measures, have significantly reduced the availability of land for Palestinians restricting their livelihoods and development, according to a new report by the UN humanitarian affairs agency.

Israeli expansionist measures have reduced to 13 per cent the availability of land in Bethlehem for Palestinian use, limited the area's access to resources and restricted its potential for development, said the report by the UN Office for Coordination on Humanitarian Affairs (UCHA).
