Former President Carter Visits GazaIn his trip to Gaza, former President Carter met with leaders from Hamas to discuss and tour the damage done by the Israeli military from the war earlier this year. While not representing the U.S. government or the Obama administration in an official capacity, Carter continues to call for negotiations between the Hamas, the U.S. and the European Union as a critical step toward peace.
In a joint-press conference with Hamas leader Ismail Haniya, Carter called for "an end of 'all violence' against both Israelis and Palestinians," and commented that:
The starving of 1.5 million human beings of the necessities of life -- never before in history has a large community like this been savaged by bombs and missiles and then denied the means to repair itself.Carter urged that, "The way of rebuilding, ending the suffering and (achieving) peace goes through the Palestinian unity." Also, Carter also visited areas damaged during the war, including Ezbet Abed Rabbo, a village that received heavy attacks from the IDF during their campaign.
Iranian Opposition Continues to Call for New Elections
As the Iranian debate over election rigging and fraud continues, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei made a rare public entrance into the political debate by calling for a partial recount of Friday's presidential vote. In a radio address, he made a surprising called for the Guardian Council to begin an inquiry into the charges made by opposition leader Mir Hussein Moussavi.
As protests continue, the Associated Press reported violence escalated when an opposition protester was shot and killed by a pro-government militia in Tehran. Foreign journalists were not permitted into the streets of Tehran without official permission, as the Iranian government continues to quell disruptions after the elections.
