I had the pleasure of moderating a great discussion yesterday, put together by the Institute for Middle East Understanding, with Prof. John Mearsheimer (our most recent Sharabi memorial lecturer) and Prof. Rashid Khalidi (our most recent Said memorial lecturer). While both speakers shared important and accurate insight into the Obama administration's (mis)handling of this conflict and the likelihood that U.S.-led negotiations will continue to fail in the future, they left listeners with no sense of optimism. Of course, a realistic assessment of the situation does not warrant any. Nonetheless, its important to listen to this discussion, even if it is ultimately depressing, because the ignorance-is-bliss attitude many have taken toward Israel-Palestine for the past two decades is largely responsible for where we are today.
